Description

The Brazilian Test (also called the Indirect Tensile Strength Test) is used to determine the tensile strength of rock. Since rocks are weak in tension and difficult to test directly, this method applies compressive load along the diameter of a disc-shaped specimen, causing tensile failure. Applications • Determination of tensile strength of rock • Design of tunnels and underground openings • Crack propagation and fracture studies • Slope stability analysis • Mining and blasting design • Rock mass behavior analysis Advantages • Simple and widely used • Suitable for brittle materials like rock • No need for complex gripping systems Limitations • Indirect method (not true tensile loading) • Stress distribution assumptions may vary • Requires proper alignment of specimen
