Soil and rock anchoring is a ground stabilization technique used to provide lateral support and improve the stability of soil or rock masses. Anchors are installed into the ground and fixed into stable strata to resist tensile forces and transfer loads from structures to the surrounding ground.
Methodology
The process involves drilling holes into soil or rock up to the required depth and inclination. High-strength steel tendons, bars, or strands are inserted into the boreholes. The anchor is then grouted using cement grout under pressure to bond it with the surrounding ground.
Anchors typically consist of two zones:
• Bond Length (Fixed Length): The portion where the grout transfers load to soil or rock
• Free Length (Unbonded Length): The portion that allows elongation during stressing
After grout hardening, the anchors are stressed using hydraulic jacks to the required load and then locked off with anchor heads.
