Description

Sieve analysis is a laboratory method used to determine the particle size distribution of coarse-grained soils. It is widely used in Geotechnical Engineering. Purpose • To determine grain size distribution • To classify soil (sand, gravel, etc.) • To understand engineering behavior of soil Procedure (Brief) 1. Take a dry soil sample and weigh it. 2. Arrange sieves in descending order of size. 3. Place soil on top sieve and shake using a sieve shaker. 4. Weigh soil retained on each sieve. 5. Calculate percentage retained and passing. 6. Plot grain size distribution curve. Result • Distribution curve is used to determine: o Effective size (D₁₀) o Uniformity coefficient (Cu) o Coefficient of curvature (Cc) Applications of Sieve Analysis 1.
