Shrinkage Limit (SL) is the maximum water content (%) at which further loss of moisture does not cause any decrease in the volume of soil
Below this limit, soil stops shrinking and becomes constant in volume. It represents the boundary between semi-solid and solid state
SL is determined in laboratory by drying a soil sample and measuring its change in volume. It is also a part of Atterberg Limits which define soil behavior at different moisture contents
Applications
Soil classification
Determination of shrink-swell behavior
Foundation design (to avoid cracks)
Used in Geotechnical Engineering
