Description

The Consolidation Test is used to determine the settlement characteristics of cohesive soils (clay) when subjected to load over time. Principle When load is applied to saturated clay: • Water is squeezed out slowly • Volume decreases → settlement occurs over time Applications • Settlement calculation of foundations • Design of buildings, bridges, dams • Embankment construction • Predicting time required for settlement • Soil improvement techniques Important Points • Used for clayey soils only • Settlement occurs over time (not immediate) • Based on Terzaghi’s consolidation theory • Helps in long-term stability analysis
