Description

The Concrete Cube Compression Test is carried out to determine the compressive strength of hardened concrete. In this test, concrete specimens are cast in standard cube moulds of size 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm. The moulds are filled with fresh concrete in layers, and each layer is properly compacted to remove air voids. After 24 hours, the specimens are demoulded and cured in water at a controlled temperature until the specified testing age, usually 7 days and 28 days. At the time of testing, the cube is removed from curing, surface moisture is wiped, and it is placed in a Compression Testing Machine (CTM). Load is applied gradually and uniformly without shock until the specimen fails. The maximum load at failure is recorded. The compressive strength of concrete is calculated by dividing the failure load by the cross-sectional area of the cube. The test is conducted as per IS 516, and results are compared with IS 456 requirements to assess the quality and strength of concrete. The average strength of at least three specimens is taken as the final result. This test is essential to ensure that concrete meets the required strength and safety standards in construction.
